She is a brilliant child, wise beyond her years and a very complex person. Even as a toddler, my sister-in-law always said, "She's got an old soul.". So that must be coming through in the image. There are photos I would like to make that would not be 'typical family images' but I'm not comfortable making them with my own children; like a child crying. I might see that on the street and love to shoot it but with my own kids I don't want to make "memories" of thier painful moments, plus, as a mother, I want to be there comforting them at that moment and feel it would be selfish to go on shooting. With a stranger's child, they have a parent with them for that purpose, so it's different. If they were alone though, I'd go and talk to them to help, so there goes shooting again! LOL!

I was happy with the softness, although it was not intentional at the moment of shooting. She walked over to me and I had to shoot fast to catch the moment, as I instantly realized it was perfect. That didn't leave time for technical perfection in the sharpness dep't, but I'm very happy iwth the results. You tend to lean towards the tack-sharp and I tend to lean towards the soft. So, I won't fault you for being unsure about that. ;)

If you repeatedly come back to the image and consider it "a shot I really like", what more could I ask for - who the heck needs the vote!! When someone as amazing as you gives me the nod, that's success in my book! Thanks Iso. :) ~ Lonnit

Its the pose and expression that catches my eye. It gives an attitude above her years, and it looks like the sort of picture that wouldn't be taken by a family member or someone close to her. I like the overall effect - the colours are great. I'm still in two minds about the softness thing - it does look like a photoshop filter effect, but I always come back to the image so I guess it can't be too bad. I too struggle to make it fit the topic, and title even, do it might just be *a shot I really like but can't vote for*

I like it. I think the foremost thing here is the polaroid-like or old-photo-like colors. I gives it that sixties feeling. This image could also be titled "kodachrome"

Yes this works really well, with the angle of the girl the colouring & lighting making for a very fine portrait. Love it.

Very nice Lonnit - I like the coloring here as well - kind of a surreal look. jano

I know just what you meant - that's how I thought it looked. As for the creativity, I don't have much - Iso is hogging it! LOL! ~ Lonnit

It looks even better now (with pbase craziness).

What I meant by "hand colored B&W" is those old classic movies they tried to convert to color. Remember those? That's how this photo looks like. Like your creativity Lonnit (wish I have some of that, sigh).

UGH! The pbase recompressing JPGed the grain. :( ~ Lonnit

Thanks Aam. I played around with the colors until I got what I liked. I'd also tried a pale bluish wash over it that gave it a very angelic, mother-nature type look to it, but I liked this one better. The chest got too blown out on the other. This seemed to have more drama and power so this is the version I kept. Thank you. :)

Thanks Antidote3. My first thought, when I downloaded the images into the computer, was "oh, it's OOF.", and my immediate second thougth was, "But I like it like that!". I'm thrilled that you appreciate that! Soft is so right for this image. You're also right about the subtlety of her attitude. I think the slight upward curve of the mouth is what takes the edge off a bit. If you look at the eyes you get more of the feeling of Power Hungry. Once you get that, then the mouth seems to be more of an 'evil grin'. Her actual expression was not that of hunger for power at all, but after I processed the photo I realized that her expression could be read that way, and since it happened to fit the topic I figured I'd run it up the flagpole and see if anyone saluted it. :) Stare a bit longer, maybe it'll hit you. If not, chalk it up as a shot you like but won't vote for. ;) Thanks so much!! :)

Paul - I see what you mean about the background; yes, it does. Cool! Thanks for commenting. :) ~ Lonnit

Like the color treatment, especially on the face. The face looks like in sepia but it's not (I think). It also looks like a hand colored B&W. Either way, good skills are apparent in this photo.

love this one lonnit.
i like the light and bg (very complimentary). but the best thing about it is the softness of the picture (sharpness is definitely overated).
there is a but though, i can't quite see it fit the challenge theme (i might be a bit slow). yes, there is a 'subtle' attitude on her facial expression. [just my opinion] :)

What my mum would have called Little Madam. Hmm, scary:>)

The way you've shot this reminds me of a studio shot made to look like an outdoor shot with the background only being a screen. It makes it look different to just a shot on the beach. I like it.
