1st: Incense by Techo

My first try at photographing smoke. Many tries with and without the built in flash. The last couple of shots I decided that the flash needs to be off to capture the red glow you see.
Light sources: a window (which was a tad open, to give the smoke some cool movement) and another small lamp to the left as well. And the black background was just a piece of plain cotton tee fabric placed three feet away. Some black foamcore or a really good fabrid would've been a lot easier to work with.

PS work: Noise removal on the background, curves, sharpening, saturation, some spot editing. And I used the gradient fill tool for the first time for a photo. That's what gave the smoke it's color.

I may have overdone it, adding the color color and saturation? please let me know if I did. Thanks :)

This is absolutely wonderful! It reflects much depth giving the feeling that the smoke is feet away and still going. Color is beautiful especially with those hot tips on the incense giving the feel of the heat. The gradient tool sometimes can surprise you. Great job Techo. jano

I really like how the smoke swirls in the background. The orange glow at the bottom of the sticks gives the impression there is a warm fire just outside of the frame. etischer

Hey, I have been burned my these sneaky little incense sticks before and they are certainly hot. I really like this shot. It makes me want to go ahead and sign up for that p.s. class. Yvonne

Thanks everyone. Glad you like it :)

Pitty though, the original photo has some really visible horizontal banding. It wasn't really undexposed, it was just about right. And you can see some faint banding in the resized version aswell :( because the smoke mostly has no detail and it's against a black bk it's quite visible there. No signs of it in the Incense sticks though. I'm using iso800 more than I would like but with insufficient light... And another push for me to start using RAW. But I do need to get an extra hard drive first, that's been the main reason why I haven't started yet. I would need to get at least two. One for the mirror backup.

wow! simply stunning! smoke, red glow, ash, side lighting on the incense and very strong use of negative space. i can almost smell it through the monitor. -Abstract

Great, i love this one. The colour of the smoke adds a mysticism to the feel on the image which considering you've called it Incense is bang on. I can feel the heat from the glow of the sticks too. Excellent.
