12 July 2005 Abstract

manual is for suckers! *

fork...check!
knief...check!
pliers...check!
set of screw-drivers...check!
hammer...check!
manual...what???
THE CAMERA MANUAL......ehh...who needs it?

hummm beer...aaaarrrggghh aaarrrggghhh!!
ALLL RIGHT!!! lets start with fork...wonder what this would do?

ps: please, let me know if the title is inapropriate.
For the records, i got this idea when Rod mentioned
"may be i should read the manual" in one of his comments
under the "burning newspaper" shot :)

Thank you Shu. you made the time spent thinking about how to arrange all the hardware worthy.
Andy, i understand what you are saying. i wanted to go to 'extreme', imagine working with a hammer on a camera ;), thats why the whole set-up. thanks for the discussion though. -Abstract

(The "clutter" is nicely arranged making for a good composition, IMO.) Shu

I like the gag. But for me, it only needs you, the camera, the fork, the manual and the bottle. The rest is the clutter. I like the pose and the composition. The B&W works well too.

Andy.....This image suits the purpose, perfectly! It may seem "cluttered" but we know the man knows EXACTLY what he's doing! Shu

thank you Pedro. i dont see myeself retiring my S1so soon. :)
Andy, thats exactly the point.
who says image has to be clean/non-cluttered? how many works in a clean/neatly-arranged garage, in reality? thats the feel i went for. reality with sarcasm and foolishness.
- Raw tools (hence the list of tools with "check" remark)
- Raw-cluttered set-up (like a garage)
- all for a very fine expensive state-of-the-art precision equipment (hence, a dslr not a p&s)
- not to mention, not in senses with alcohol beverage clearly in site
- main thing, just a sight of the "manual"...all the way back, which shows, it comes the last after trying all the hardware...
the whole thing is a funny take on a non-logical typical behaviour (stretched to extreme) of many.
nothing in this shot is unintentional including dark-mono garage feel, except i forgot to move my cell phone. then i thought, it could be explained as, i would even call friends who might know something about the camera before trying the manual. so left it in there.
thanks for your input. -Abstract

My opinion on this is fun but....could do better.
As a visual gag its OK but as an image its cluttered.

"If everything fails, read the manual" I also apply that rule all the time, I don't waste my time, and only a few times a messed up something.. so on the end, the rule is still applicable...

Nice shot Abs, I hope we are not going to loose you because of your Nikon treason.... I hope we can forgive you ;-)

Thank you Techo. I am glad you liked the image.
Photocat...a sample...just random shot of a flower.

here is my first day with D70. i was in Crestone, Colorado. A town at the trailhead for Kit Carson mountain in Sangre de Cristo. It was a very interesting town with population of only *73*, but amazingly is one of the biggest center for spritual retreats. If you have time, read description under full-version of the photos. I tried to give some information.
Creston: colorado is the album at....http://www.abstract.travel.photoshare.co.nz/
Hope you like it.

Abs, You've been shooting with S1 far too long.... its high time you move on to DSLR... How's you new camera working out? And when will we see some samples... -Cat
ctfchallenge13-Jul-2005 21:03
Thank you Rod. i intentionally kept the camera cap on ;)
Cat, it took me all these hardware to realize that if you just take the lens cap off, camera will start taking nice photographs, instead of the complete black-dark shots. hehehe :) btw, i chose the monotone (with heavy contrast) to give kind of "dark" feel to the shot.
Andrew, what do you think that fork is doing there? :) hmmmm macaroni-cheese and beer. now i am hungry!
thank you all for your comments. -Abstract

Well well well Abs!!! Is this your way to get a Nikon camera into an *****CANON**** challenges!!! LOL Or you are trying to tell us that your Nikon already needs work. Now see if it were a great camera like CANON, you wouldn't have to fiddle with it... you just start shooting. I don't remember Fly or Rod mentioning they had to fiddle with their new CANON before they started shooting.... LOL

Humor aside... I think its a great shot. And the monotone gives a nice pleasent look too... and we are all half engineers when it comes to techie stuff -Cat

Fancy you making all us Canon owners look at a Nikon, I had to make the sign of the cross when I saw it:-) Well set up & shot Abs I like the tone too.

Thank you Lee. i am glad you liked it.
Mary Anne, yeah i like the new Nikon a lot and i think i know too many people too well to leave this friendly forum. its so much fun.
Markjay, lemme explain.
this is my new D70 and instead of reading the manual, i am trying all the listed hardware to see what this camera can do. most of the people, at least me and some more i know, just start fiddling with menus/set-up instead of reading manual throroughly. this shot portrays that behaviour stretched to extreme. even the alcohol adds a little humour and reasoning for my behaviour. hope you like the shot after the explanation.
