Novacastrian

Newcastle

Well seeing that all my pretty shots of the foreshore and promenades that surround the foreshore have been banned I chose this one.
Newcastle used to be the second largest steel producing city in Australia , but the steelworks was eventually closed down only a few years ago throwing thousands out of work with very few job prospects on the horizon.
This left a major depression in the town with high unemployment.
The city itself is going through a regeneration with millions being spent on foreshore development and inner city accommodation making a major revival around the adjoining city beaches and harbour.
With the Hunter Valley Vineyards only forty minutes away and Nelson Bay or "the Bay" as locals call another 40 minutes from Newcastle, both being major tourist attractions in the state of New South Wales, Newcastle had to reinvent itself and try and secure some of those tourist dollars back into the town.

To this day the port of Newcastle is the Major coal exporting port in Australia and it is not unusual to see up to thirty coal carriers standing off to sea waiting for a berth to load their shipments.
The port is shallow and requires vessels to leave and arrive on the tides and to navigate a narrow channel which is being continually dredged because of the silt build up as the Hunter River empties into this Harbour.

So I think this is probably a pretty typical scene which epitomizers what the town is all about, sleeves rolled up and plenty of hard work.
Gee....I would have loved to show you what the town is becoming but those shots were way to pretty and I just could not bring myself to show the "real downsides" as that would have been negative and
destructive.

The tugs are scattered around the port at a couple of locations .
In this instance they use 5.
Two on the port side ,one on the starboard side, one at the bow and one at the stern, plus the pilot vessel that meets the carrier off the port for navigation purposes.
Docking and berth fees aren't cheap and these guys are very quick at what they do.
Probably takes no longer than thirty minutes by the time you see the vessel entering until it docks.

These Coal carriers are quite large and rival some of the "super tankers" in size.
The port facilities in Newcastle are second to non in the world and are continually breaking records for coal loaded in a day.

I like this photo and story. I have never seen a large boat dock before, is it normal to have that many Tug Boats escorting the ship?

I *really* like Rods topic, this gallery is going to be like National Geographic. Lots of photos and stories. This is a very good leaning challenge.

Fort Scratchley now houses a Maritime Museum Gayle.
For those unfamiliar with why a "fort' was built it goes back to the second world war where the fear of a Japanese invasion was a reality.
A Mini sub came up off the coast and lobbed two shells into the Steel Works and surrounds.
The shells never exploded and the guns at Fort Scratchley were never fired in anger.

There still in "the can" but I did put one up yesterday in Negative Space in the CSLR Challenge and I will add a link once I set up a Hunter Valley Album in my Fototime account.

Interesting shot, along with a very informative commentary. Can you give us a link to some of your "pretty" shots? I'd like to see them (even if Rod doesn't).

Now I thought you lived in Sydney! I've been to Newcastle, a long time ago. I remember walking up to a fort on top of a hill. Interesting photo and I like your commentary very much.

:-) I've sobered up now. I was looking at an off topic shot before but now with the text it works very well. An excellent commentary for a really good shot. Well done Blue.

Who are you? You have no name, no date the shot was taken. What is this ship the essence of? Don't tell me Newcastle, it has a Spanish name. Or is it docking in Newcastle? Have you been drinking heavily? That would explain everything:-)
