Well, at least you and I think so - well and Pops, partially! LOL! This didn't even get a single comment nor vote in the CSLR challenge. :( ~ Lonnit

:-) Enjoy the moment, it's a great shot.

LOL!
*I* know not a question of never, it's a question of when, but so many people in these forums do not allow for artistic license. :( I too hate when a good shot is ruined by a BH; it really bugs me. In this case though, the highlights were not even blown in the original! That sky in the lower right was a distinct but pale baby blue. The BHs came in the processing when I added the effects, so they were very much indeed intentional. I'll absolutely take a smack on the head for posting BHs where they don't belong, but since I very carefully placed them there, where they didn't exist before, I'm going to take all the credit in the world - just as I take the blame when they don't belong. Don't worry about the next shot - you can smack me hard if I post them when they don't belong! I mean it!! Don't let me get away with that cr*p! I'm counting on you, and I know I really don't have to ask! LOL! But, I retain the right to dance with glee when I run free, flailing my artistic license as my get-out-of-jail-free card, when I CHOOSE to blow my highlights. :)

Bleeding L you go on Lonnit:-) It’s not a question of never in photography it's a question of what works for a particular shot. 8 times out of 10 the BHs are a fault & shouldn't be there. People seem to think that because it was a bright day or there was a light shining on the paintwork that's an excuse for a BH. There's never an excuse for a BH that attracts the eye away from the shot. I don't know why people can't just say that I have this great shot but it's ruined by the BH so I will go back & shoot it again when the light is less contrasty for digital. But they post them here & make an excuse as to why the BH is in the shot. Now in your shot here you have made good use of the BH to make a good shot. This doesn’t mean that your next shot you post with a BH that is a fault & gets negative comments should raise any confusion in that 100mph mind of yours:-)

OMG!!!! Can someone get a news crew in here?! We've got people praising blown highlights and appreciating them for their artistic value!!!! Did hell just freeze over? LOL!!!! What an event!!!! I really liked them and thought I'd get so much flack for it, but you guys are actually praising them!!! Zowie-ka-blaowie! There have been so many threads and comments with people complaining about BH and other tech 'flaws' and it drives me nuts when artistic value is sometimes overlooked b/c of hang-ups with technical perfection. I am sooooo thrilled and flattered that this shot is being recognized! These forums are very difficult places to attept to overcome these 'tech purists' so I really feel I've accomplished something here! It was a risk - I thought I'd be shredded for this! I'm doing the Meposian Dance of Joy instead!!! Thank you sooooooooooooooooo much guys! You truly made my day! This is very encouraging for my experimental side! :)

Pops, for you I eased up on the distortion, but I had to stay true to myself and keep some of it in there, otherwise it would no longer be a Lonnit. :)

Sometimes I do have to shoot for mass approval, if I ever want to get my stock sold! LOL!

Love the colors, love the tone, I even love the brightness (BHL?) on the right.
Hate the distorted perspective. Sorry! IMHO don't ever use a fisheye for tall buildings.

But the important thing, Lonnit, is that you love it! Shoot for yourself and ignor what the rest of the world has to say. Always shoot for yourself!

I wasn't sure if you'd love it or hate it. LOL! I'm glad you approve. It's a push, I know, but I happen to really like it. I will play around with that building on the left. Thanks.
De-fishing is taking the barrel distortion out of a fisheye shot. I've heard there are programs to do it but I just used photoshop distortions to concave the convex. I'm glad you approve and appreciate the blown highlights here. I struggled with them to keep them from totally blowing as much as possible, but to me they were an important part of the overall look. I think this is a strong case for breaking the rules. It's a very stylized image. You've not seen anything like it? WOW! That's really excellent! You know I like to be different. :) I always feel good when I get the Rod-nod! :) ~ Lonnit

PS. If you do burn in then try & keep some of the glass reflections.
Rod 08-Feb-2005 08:49
First wot is de fishing & how do you do it? I've only seen this image after the de fish & I really like it. This is a good example of what in another shot would a massive fault (BHs) working to make this shot a goodun. I think the whites in the sky & buildings are fantastic, a look I haven’t seen used in this way before. The only thing I have trouble with is the smaller building bottom left I would really burn that in just into the road so it's barely recognisable to enhance the surreal or abstract nature of the shot. Great work gal:-)

Ok, Pops. I did a bit of defishing so you wouldn't be so scared. BUT, I had to keep it in the unusual realm so I went in a different direction. You can comment after you stop clutching your heart! LOL! ~ Lonnit

Well, it was my first day taking the fisheye out and the family's destination was NYC, hence the combo of fisheye and tall buildings! LOL! I liked the odd nature the distortion gave to the building. I was going to defish it but intentionally decided not to! LOL! So, maybe this is my tacky. Are we all allowed a secret tackiness to sneak in somewhere? LOL! Let's see how the comments go here. I'm sure they'll be plenty more to agree with you! LOL! Thanks for the feedback and thank you for that very nice compliment as well! :) ~ Lonnit

Lonnit, Lonnit, Lonnit. I know you like your fisheye lens and they can take some very good pictures. But pictures of tall buildings is not one of them. I find the distortion of the perspective very disturbing. I mean VERY disturbing. It looks like the building is going to fall over. I feel this picture is just not up to your own very high standards.
