Grand Canyon Butte (*)

Grand Canyon, Az.

This was a photo I had a photoshop epiphany with. I hadn't noticed how blue the shadows were, until someone else pointed them out to me. A slight tweek with photoshop's colour correction tool and the golden glow of the butte really lept of the page. The effect is partly down to the setting sun causing the shadows at the bottom, and clouds causing those at the top.

I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon but seeing this solidifies my determination to go! This one is 100% on topic. Great job using PS to bring it back as you remember it! Not sure if it’s worth the effort but I would consider cropping out the very top to eliminate the highlighted area that is just barely visible. What makes this work so well (at least for me) is the natural frame you’ve created with shadow and the center being the golden rocks. By removing the very top (less than 0.125 inch) you further strengthen this framing effect. Brian

I started a thread about the photoshop modification I did to the image when I performed it a few weeks ago;http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=11697110. I was a little reluctant to post the link here as some people in the thread seem to prefer the original, thinking that because this version has been photoshopped it's less real.

What actually happened was that the cameras AWB got confused and modified the photo, I have then modified it back to the view that I remember.

Anyway, the link is posted for the benefit of alexieg and his ravens, I'd love to see what that photo would look like warmed up.

This is very stunning. Mother Nature does a wonderful job of giving us so many opportunities to record her. It is then incumbant upon us photogs to be at the right place at the right time. Beautiful!! Dorys

Real nice. I like your rich color, also in shadows. I have a few shots of the same subject shortly after ther sunrise, but with mostly bluish shadows, like here:
