...version 3! Hopefully the colour balance is better now... Phil

Nico, the original is actually much "browner", I tend to play with RGB levels somewhat, but always finish thinking "Is this better or worse?"
I think the toning is probably more accurate, with the light dusty colour on the tyre, and the original is certainly not over-exposed.
However, I will have a look using your technique - I don't tend to play much with layers and such... so much Photoshop still to learn! Thanks, Phil.

Much better indeed. The diagonal line, the edge of the puddle, that starts above the tire works very well.

it looks a bit overexposed... but dont despair!

in photoshop one thing you can do to fix this is to duplicate the layer,
then set the blending mode to multiply, and the opacity to 38, 76 or 100 depending
on if you need one, two or three stops compensation. Play around with the values.

and maybe you could also use a bit of warming (adding yellow and red tones)
best of luck!

I'll revisit this at home... there's certainly plenty more space available in the original. Phil

I'd agree that it needs a bit more space

I do like this image very much, Phil, but I do have a problem with the fact that the tyre virtually touches the left and lower edges of the picture and feels squeezed in. Do you have some more room on both sides on your original? It would give the main subject some elbow room, so to speak, and make this image even stronger. Just my 2 cts.
