The Old Aquaduct

Kyoto

I especially like the old brick aquaduct near Nanzenji temple in Kyoto. It was built in the early 1900s to bring water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto city and is still in use today. The aquaduct, Nanzenji temple (built in the 12th century) and the park around it are also popular spots for artists and for family picnics. Brick buildings and bridges are rare in Japan because they collapse too easily during earthquakes which are common here. This aquaduct has survived so far and I hope it will for many centuries more.

At first look I automatically thought that this image had been worked over in Photoshop but the more I looked at it the more I realized that it is a pretty straight shot. I like the softness and agree with another person that there is human interest as well as a fine old structure. Well done!

lovely colors in the structure

Beautiful perspective and nice composition. As others said, people added a quality to the shot. For my taste reds seems a tad oversaturated

Thanks for the comments.
'Man is the measure of all things.' said da Vinci (I believe ) when he made his famous drawing, and seeing people in a picture immediately tells us how large something is. I have the same image without people and it just doesn't work in the same way.

Lovely. As for the people, yes, it's nice to see them. I think this would have been even stronger though with just the child alone b/c of the overwhelming (to him) size of the structure. Beautiful colors. ~ Lonnit

It's also nice to see a photo with some people in it, which adds special interest. I've been thinking that human figures have been lacking in almost all the entries, including my own. --Mary Anne

Julian, I really like the colors of this structure. It gives the feeling of venerable old age. Very nice. Ann
