Thanks for your comment. I think I understand the problem. Because it is not a composite, there are several flaws. The heron shows some motion blur, and the overall picture lacks contrast. The moon is also kind of small compared to typical composites. These are things I have to accept when taking real photos of nature at night. --Garrett

In my mind I know I'm supposed to like this, but in my heart, I don't. You did a fine job with it, I just don't know why it isn't hitting me. Is it perhaps too cliche? Have I seen this composited so often that I don't appreciate the real thing when it comes along? Is it just too Hallmark? It's bugging me; I know I should think this is beautiful! ~ Lonnit

Thanks. It was captured like that. I was photographing the avocets in the moonlight when the night heron appeared. I took three shots of it. One with the heron to the left of the moon, one with it in the middle, and this one. This was the sharpest. The only postprocessing I did was white balance, curves, cloning out some dust, resize, and USM. --Garrett
