Perfect timing and rarely seen creatures make this one of the best and most original wildlife images in the challenges... or anywhere else for that matter (in my limited experience). -tv
They are very aggressive, this one was about 1 inch long and aggressively confronted me as I approached. It would turn and and face me with those fierce looking jaws.
The Echidna laps up ants but did not get to eat this one.
Thanks for commenting, Regards Bob... (p.s. I Geotagged this image.)
That ant looks like a bulldog ant. I remember seeing a show on TV about particularly aggressive ants, and jack-jumper bulldog ants were on the program. The thing that fascinated me the most about them is how excellent their vision seems to be. They're supposedly primitive ants. If so, why do they have such excellent vision? Anyway, whereas most ants navigate by smelling the ground with their antennae, using their vision only to a small degree, these guys seemed on the show to be primarily visual, even eagerly staring down the cameraman. Melbob, I wonder if you had the same experience, and did I even identify the ant correctly? -- Victor
