This is a photomultiplier tube. We're looking through the semi-transparent photocathode into the tube which was back-lit by flash coming in through the side. PM tubes are used to detect very low levels of light. Under the right conditions, individual photons can be counted. Cool shot and very nice colors .. has an opulent effect (in a good way :) ). What is the device though?
