Wow, I just checked in and saw all the comments. Thank you everybody! I'm glad this one got 'noticed', as I liked it the best of the few I came up with. [None of my vague ideas for possible shots worked for me.] This one was more of an accident than anything. The afternoon light was hitting the ponderosa pine beyond the fence just so, and I thought the light and color might make for an interesting OOF background. I found I liked the way this one sort of balanced with the foreground. Olaf, thank you for all of your input, I'll try the cropping idea if I find the time. (I wasn't sure at first if I liked 'egg cup' or this one best at first; but just before I posted them, I looked at them side by side and decided I liked the overall balance of this one better (and also thought the knot might be distracting rather than interesting). So thank you for your input on that too...I posted 'egg cup' because part of me was still not sure, and I was curious what others might think. --Melanie

Regarding my previous comment about cropping: I've now played with cropping this in Photoshop. You could crop all the way down to an aspect of 1:2 (330x660px for example) - I liked it better that way, ymmv.

Compared to 'Egg Cup' in Exhibition, I prefer this one for the following reasons:
1. The less saturated colors seem to go better with this image.
2. No distracting OOF knot in the horizontal wood.
3. More of the vertical wood showing - good for the overall composition.
4. The direction of the grain in the stone leads the eye back into the image.

The one thing I am unsure about in this shot, is whether it is a positive or a negative that the orange part of the OOF background repeats itself right at the top border - perhaps it would be better to crop that orange repetition out (perhaps 40px off the top)? The more I think about it, the more I think so - it kind of leads the eye out of the frame...

Hey guys, that OOF line in the background is essential for the whole composition. There is no doubt in my mind it is a beautiful addition to the photograph!!!

Hi mlynn... Olaf is spot on: "zen" is what it looks like. But I also agree with Sharon: I think I would have like it more without the background object (or perhaps if that part was just enough in focus so that one could make out how it relates to the fence?) Well seen! Regards ~jnconradie

Love it! Something very Zen about it...

This is a fascinating shot, the textures in the foreground and the curious thing going on in the background really hold my interest. I am not sure how well it works. On the one hand, I really want to look at the rock and the fence but keeping getting pulled away by the background. On the other hand, it is that very thing that makes this such an interesting image. I guess I am on the fence! ~Sharon
