Melanie, oops, I almost missed that you'd uploaded a new version of this. Quite a bit more dramatic, well done. Again, just a superb idea and I think you've carried it out nicely. -Michael
Michael, thank you, thank you! Your take is much more like I was originally thinking, but I just couldn't THINK of it, if that makes any sense :). And it also helps take care of a nagging issue I had with this image--namely the black fill meeting up with the paper. I just couldn't seem to smooth it out (and it's covering the other paper beneath that happens to be yellower in color). It never occurred to me to try the 'lighting effects' filter, as I'm not very familiar with it. So I will probably either try the filter or try reshooting it. Thanks again! --Melanie

Melanie, these three pieces are a fantastic concept. I'm really delighted to see all three versions. I'll consolidate my comments here, but know that I've thoroughly enjoyed all three.
For me, this is the strongest of the three compositions. I like it's simplicity and the lines of text are nicely bold. I think that these three pieces would benefit from some dramatic lighting...they all seem a bit flat to me. I spent 2 minutes with the "Lighting Effects" filter in PS, results here: http://www.pbase.com/image/62167232 . Now, I'm not suggesting that my rendition is anything to brag about...it's just a quick idea about how you might play with lighting (either real or PS) if you are so inclined.
Excellent and creative work, even if you take the concept no farther. -Michael
Thank you jnconradie (for both of your comments!), I appreciate it. Yep, I typed out the lines, each on a separate layer on a 13 X 19 canvas--so they would be large enough to read with a book placed on top. Thanks again, Melanie
Congratulations on a really "out of the box" concept. This thought never crossed my mind! And it must have taken hours to collate all those opening lines? Well done! ~jnconradie
