It has a wonderful universal appeal. Nice capture.

Thank you jn! The only processing used here, was in developing the RAW-file and in making a web-version. I used ACR to develop the file and compared to the default settings, I increased the WB from 4750K to 6000K (AWB was fooled by the warm colors), increased the brightness from 50 to 60, lowered the contrast (from 25 to zero). The lower contrast and the higher brightness made the colors dull, so I increased the saturation from 0 to 25. So, to answer your post-processing question more directly, the blur is a result of the large aperture only. What's in his hand? Just a long stick he found and played with...
Superb portrait, Olaf. He looks so relaxed and natural. I wondered what he has in his hand? Another question, if I may: did you do any post-processing (blurring?) towards the bottom-half of the picture, or is it simply the shallow DOF from the f/2.0 that caused this (very nice) out of focus effect? ~jnconradie

Thanks guys! I was hesitating about submitting this, because as the father it is hard to know whether the appeal is universal enough. Your prompt comments have reassured me that the photograph does indeed have some kind of broader appeal...

I echo Traveller's thoughts and will just add that this is a stunning portrait. -Michael
