Traveller, I've been looking at this since you created the b&w version and I gotta tell you that I've been conflicted. Your color version is very strong and it appealed to me, but for street photography I eventually always seem to gravitate to b&w as my favorite. I do like this version...very much so. I think I now understand your original goal to capture the inner city in repose, but not a peaceful repose...rather a repose with an energy and life force of its own. Visually, I like the nuances of this b&w conversion...sure, the highlight at center is blown but it serves to draw my eye to the center of conflict in this image. There are many other nuances, the lighted window at upper left, details like "TOY" which are elegant in this version that I didn't really see in the color version. All in all, I think you've achieved something quite extraordinary, a message most unexpected by me. Nicely done and a tip o' the hat to you for exploring this subject so deeply. -Michael

I like this one better and in color.

I like the black and white version better. For some reason I notice the people more in that version.

My son has an opinion too. He was standing right next to me as I was experimenting with 'Gradient Map'. He had a strong preference for any of the colored gradients. His words: "NOT the black one". His favorite was with 'Medium Spectrum'.

I think I like the black and white version better, but there are some things that bother me about it. For example, the traffic lights look like donuts because of the channel clipping. This can be fixed in the B&W version with a curves adjustment, but that exacerbates another problem, the wall under the light in the center of the picture being washed out. I'm not sure what to do about that, but that item in the photo is more distracting in the B&W version.

I've not done much with black and white, so, unfortunately, I don't have much to offer. My entries in the current challenge are really my first serious attempt to do black and white work, not counting traditional photography.

I think if this were my picture, I'd decide what I really wanted to emphasize and make the rest darker for the black and white version. I'm going to stop now. The more I look at this, the less I know what to recommend. -- Victor

This is actually a high rent area in Los Angeles...which makes me crazy! I have a client that runs a perfume business on Winston Street, though it it generally called the Toy District. The reason rents and property values are so high, or so I am told, it that you are allowed to do both comercial retail/wholesale and warehousing in this area.

But, at exactly 6pm all the rolldown shutters are lowered and the entire area is surrendered to the homeless, the violent, the dispossessed.

Very weird. BTW, do you like the B&W version better? I am a color guy and like the colors of the night...so my judgement may be bad on this. Therefore, I solicit you opinion, (smile). Best wishes, Traveller

I rather like the walk signs, too. I was also glad to be able to read the street sign and the multiple TOY District signs. Why is it called Toy District, by the way? -- Victor

You guys are so funny! Yes, I cleaned my windshild, mores the pitty because I particuarly liked the light streaking in the previous image. I also like in this image the little walk signs that are on. Victor, tents? Hell, there are hundreds of them in this area, sometimes all lined up...but everyone is asleep and so I didn't photograph them. Maybe tonight. Remeber I was kind of chased out of the area yesterday evening.

I would further add that all three of my entries are very disapointing to me. Their only virtue is that they are current and evidence that I am trying...at least at something. I hope to come up with better images this weekend if people leave me alone...lol. Best Wishes, Traveller

Traveller, this shot feels much more personal to me...in other words, no, I don't want to go walking there. I like being able to read "Los Angeles St" on the cross street sign and I like the visual flow of the street curving away at the back. -Michael

Traveller, I was going to comment about the missing tent with the new entry, but then I saw ANOTHER TENT! Or maybe it's the same one just moved. I think you've presented the scene much better in this picture, mainly because now we can see the people clearly enough to be able to make out what they're doing. The streaks are gone now. Did you clean your windshield? -- Victor
