Repo*sessed

Maribyrnong High Point Shopping Centre

Could not resist capturing this, albeit between two layers of glass.
I was shopping today and happened upon this pet shop image.
This is draft 3, Worked on the contrast and a little sharpening smart sharp 100% 0.8, 0 and only applied via mask to some of the fur. Then desaturated.

Canon EOS 5D ,Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
1/160s f/3.5 at 51.0mm iso1600 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

A nice, simple way to do it is to just use the channel mixer set to monochrome. Play with the sliders until you get what you like. It's a good idea to try to keep the channels adding up to 100%. ~ Lonnit

Thanks for your helpful suggestions, I spent some time with different techniques but I also would be interested in B&W conversion actions. Must do some more research, I've been a bit lazy and used desat. too much. regards Bob.

It's cute in color, but the BW was soooo sweet. As for the contrast, it's as simple as clicking on the fur in curves and just pulling it down a bit until it looks good.Hmmm... I belive it's control+click. I just do it automatically so I could be wrong @ control. ~ Lonnit

Too cute! And this version definitely also works much better for me that the first. ~jnconradie

Bob, I can certainly understand why you couldn't pass up on these cute pups...a fun image to start off the Eligible Gallery. I think this full color is better than the partial desaturation and I agree with Lonnit that this is an excellent candidate for full b&w.

For either color or b&w, I suggest trying a local contrast enhancement with Filter->Unsharp Mask-> Amount: 10% to 20%, Radius: 50, Threshold: 0. It gives a lot of punch to the black fur and is a nice treatment against the haze of glass. -Michael

Really hard to fix a photo that has glass reflection but I think this one in colour might have slightly better contrast. Comments welcome. Bob

Looks like you've got some serious image quality issues here. Very high noise in the black fur. I'm figuring it was underexposed in the black, losing detail, so you pumped it up, no? The rest of the image looks dang good for ISO1600. I think you pulled the curve up way to high in the fur, b/c there's a lack of contrast. Pull the fur back down a bit to get rid of the obvious noise and increase the contrast.

As for the partial saturation - I'm not huge on that technique, but in this instance I wouldn't use it at all. It's bringing all the attention to the toy, which is a distraction from th main subject, which is those adorable sleeping poochies. There's nothing wrong with, and everything right with, making this a full BW image.

Cute shot - good find. ~ Lonnit

LOL....I really like this. And on that happy note, or on this happy picture, it's off to bed for me. Best Wishes, Traveller
