Keep it up and your kids are going to be messed up! I think that at this size it is really hard for anyone to make a fair judgement on photoshop work. I really think that the tone (color cast) of the picture enhances the image, as the washing out of part of the wall. I am also not sure how this image would do on it's own. It seems like it could be with an article, or in a series, but I am not sure if the image alone tells enough of a story, the title helps with that but seems to me that I would need to see a series of images? Gary,

I am all for criticism. In the last challenge, I had a photo that I put a green color cast on and people hated it. So I removed it and I think it was better. However, I am not meek and I will call it as I see it. I figure the asterisk goes both ways. I was bothered by the comments only because I didn't think people understood what they were seeing. Some people took issue with the "lines" (which I didn't add and I feel strongly should stay), some people thought I just blurred her features (not true). I spent about an hour on her face and the process was harder than it looks. So the purpose of the challenge (mine) was two-fold. First, to help people understand what I did and also, if they got a much better result, to learn from them. I'm not mad at anybody. I consider the many of the challenge regulars my friends. But without a healthy dialogue like this, then these challenges just become a bunch of meaningless mutual congratulation. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Andy,

Thanks for commenting and I agree with you. This is EXACTLY what I had envisioned before I shot it which is why I haven't changed it.

Grant, the PS work is highlighted because it has been used to create an unreal effect, which draws attention to itself as being PS work. It is not bad PS work! Challengning someone else to carry out your vision would be fruitless. If you have fulfilled your vision, then you are happy.

I'm new here, so perhaps my comments aren't as important, but I must say, Grant, that you sure don't seem to want to hear any criticism!

I'm starting to get a little offended by all the comments on the bad PS work. I challenge someone else to do a better job. I will even send the full res file if you want.

I can see "the scream" a little as well. Its a pity because for me I like the treatment youve given the overall shot but the lack of face looks too PS because it is obviously. However, the idea is rather intriguing.

Whew! I can see why your wife hates this (I think) and it has nothing to do with the lines. I find this very creepy and it speaks of child abuse. I know you didn't mean it that way but that is how it affects me. Perhaps this is what your wife is feeling too. It is a very effective photo since it truly does give rise to strong feelings. Makes me cringe. Ann C.

Do all of the line haters realize that those are normal anatomic structures? They are called melolabial furrows and the one under her mouth is called the mentolabial sulcus. I did not add those in and they are not the borders of my photoshop editing. I still can't figure out why you want it smooth...
Guest 30-Aug-2005 19:37
I think if you toned down the lines around the mouth and nose you'd accomplish that "thin web of skin" you're going for.

but it will still disturb me! LOL
Guest 30-Aug-2005 12:58
Maybe I have a diferent idea than the people who don't like it. I wanted it to look like there was a thin web of skin covering her features. Istarted out with it perfectlt smooth but it was too static. That is why I put the shadows back in.
Guest 30-Aug-2005 07:13
If I'm honest, then no, I don't like it either. Why? Because it *looks* like a poor attempt at PhotoShop. Now, don't shoot me, I'm not saying it *is* a poor attempt but that's just my immediate reaction to it.
Maybe it looks different bigger.

Good! That was the goal...
Guest 29-Aug-2005 15:58
I'm sorry, but this just disturbs me! :-)
Guest 28-Aug-2005 21:25
this kidda reminds me of the movie the grudge.....spooky!
Guest 28-Aug-2005 14:20
I guess I don't understand what lines are bugging people. I left the folds that would normally separate her cheeks from her mouth because I think they add emotion. Other than those, everything was completely smooth until I burned in the shadows for her eyes and mouth.

Is it possible that you could do this permanantly to a 15yo?
Guest 28-Aug-2005 10:03
Like others have said, the boundary around the the edits (nose, mouth) is distracting. It is the first thing I see each time I pull up the image and, IMHO, not up to Moosible standards. I would try using the Patch tool to get a smoother effect, then Fade it to retain a ghost impression of the detail. Unrelated, I have an idea for a kid shot that requires props I don't have (and won't buy), but as an MD, you'll have at fingertips. Drop me a note if interested.

Scary! kinda disturbing(not aweful though) for a photo of a little kid. I might understand why your wife doesn't like this. This reminds me of The Exorcist or that girl in The Ring. Though I do agree it could have life outside of this challenge but perhaps with a different title.

I'd get rid of the lines around her mouth , chin and nose, leaving just a hint of her open mouth, her nose and eyes. I think the brows are ok, but I would have to see the effect without outlines I mentioned. It's really a good image and very creative, IMO. shu

ps: This image reminds me of Edvard Munch's "The Scream."

What I like best, is that the doll is faceless also. I like it and think and think it fits the challenge.

I do think it could have life outside of the challenge.
iso320027-Aug-2005 20:36
Well a lot of the images I've done in the past would never have come about if it weren't for the challenge that's true, and of course for what we're doing here first and foremost it needs to fit the context. I'm just not so sure this one has the kind of longevity in it that your previous works do.
Guest 27-Aug-2005 19:49
I don't know if it would stand on its own either. But is that important? I never would have made this if it weren't for the challenge so doesn't it only need to fit that context?
iso320027-Aug-2005 19:39
I like the colour treatment and overall weirdness. But I have to wonder how this picture would stand on its own. Outside the confines of this challenge, is this a great image that would work on show elsewhere? I'm not so sure it would. It looks a bit like the censorship marks that are on images when people aren't legally allowed to be shown

Traveller,

I appreciate your comments but I have to disagree. This was FAR from a "simple blurring of her face." I used the clone tool to move parts of her cheeks and forehead over her features so that the color and grain would match. Then I used the burn tool over her eyes and mouth to give them some depth. I wanted to still convey some emotion without her features. If her face were as smooth as a cue ball, there wouldn't be much going on.

Well, to start with, the lines are far too distinct around the mouth...interestingly, this isn't so for the eyes. I don't mind a gauzy kind of mask over her mouth, that's the whole point of the picture...but rather than a simple blurring into her face...this is too distinct....IMHO (maybe the current image is like she needs to wash her face...and that's not the effect you want).

Best Wishes, Traveller

What would you change about it? I spent a lot of time trying to make it look just like that.
Canon DSLR Challenge27-Aug-2005 19:08
LOL!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder why she hates it??? Still, I think that the mouth could be done better...the eyes I'm good with, but not the mouth. I think that this can be a really good picture, I'm just sure that it's there yet. Best Wishes, Traveller
