Michael, this is an AMAZING photograph. For me, everything about it just works perfectly. For example: the huge contrast between the white rose and the black in the background; the chrome like reflection of the vase; the horizontal line suggested by the leaves just at the fade from grey to black point. I even like the way you've framed the image for display. E-

Your image is a puff (he he) of fresh air, a beautiful still life image nicely crafted.

It has more than a couple merits upon which to stand.

Hey, Mikel. I worked with various light sources tonight and find that the 50 watt halogen I used really works the best. Flash does give a sharper shadow but at a loss to many of the other details. This original image is actually a blend of three exposures, one for the rose, one for the leaves, and one for the vase and shadow. I'm substantively pleased with the outcome and will let the original image stand on its merits (or lack there of :-). I do appreciate all of your suggestions. The experimentation with light sources has been fun and enlightening (pun intended). -Michael

I would not go with a flash. Is the halogen lamp rectangular in shape? Perhaps rotating it 90 degrees to a vertical orientation? Or moving the lgiht source away from the subject more?

Michael. Please don't replace with a "flash" image - the softness of the shadow really works here, for me at least.
I do see a bit of posterisation, but that may just be the poor screen I have at work.

Mikel, thanks for noticing that light spot...all taken care of (I hope, since Pbase is showing me a very bizarre multi-color version of the image...grrrr).

Interesting observation about the shadow since that was my nemesis in creating this image. It is a single halogen light source, but I too would like a crisper shadow and think perhaps I should work with the flash rather than lamps. -Michael

Just noticed in the thumbnail that there is a lighter spot in the background above and to the right pf the rose.

Nice compostion, Michael. The subject is immaculate, the shadow perhaps a touch too indistinct. But that alone is not reason enough to like this image any less. The smooth fade of the background from white to black is also very nice.

I suspect the shadow lost its edges because of the second light source.
