Thanks for pointing that out, Bleau. I'd have to agree with you on that. ~ Lonnit

This is what does it for you Lonnit.......it's the spontaniety of the young girl jumping off the seat.
If you take that element out of the shot it would just be a nice shot, but with that extra element it has given the image depth with more to see than what the eye can reveal.

I only try to figure out why it works so I know what it was that I did right so that I can repeat it! LOL! I really like the wood planking too. It adds some nice texture. Yes, that is my family. ~ Lonnit

Lonnit, I think when a photo says this much its not necessary to address why but just enjoy it. I know we can learn from the good and bad points but the point is you saw it and managed to capture it. I can look at it for ages and see so many things. I also love the decking or pavement. It seems to give the picture more depth. Is this your family? Mark

Thanks Mark. That comment meant a lot. There is something about this shot that to me makes it feel special. I'm trying to figure out what it is. It is well composed, with the grid well used, in addition we have the leading lines of the rails, bench, and reflective area to the left. Ok, so that says a technically sound composition. But this has more to it than that. There's a strong mood to it. Relaxed, each person doing thier own thing, yet together by the fact that he is holding hands with the boys and looking towards the direction of the girl. There's the wonderful late afternoon sun too. There's the styling that allows for the "blown" whites. Well, I guess when you put all that together, it's not so much what it has, but instead that it's not wanting for anything. One feels satisfied looking at it, not saying, "It's a nice shot, but..." or "if only". I guess that is it. I feel satisfied, content, and happy when I look at it.

Thanks,
Lonnit

Lonnit, its a great shot. I was flicking through the gallery thinking how ordinary many of them are, which is why street photography is actually quite difficult to get right and then I saw this one. Lovely, well done. MArk

Thanks. I wasn't concerned about the highlights either. I'm fine with them when they are more stylized like this. I think then add impact too. This was actually late afternoon. I'm glad you appreciate this shot. I happen to love the feel of it. I'm also thrilled that I got this nice a candid shot of my own family! LOL! Thanks for the K tip. ~ Lonnit

Wonderful shot Lonnit .
The blown out highlights don't worry me at all.
It gives the image more depth and that could be early morning with the sun draining in from the right.
I found with my 10D the same thing happens frequently ,then I tried shooting using the Kelvin setting at a colour temperature of 4800 and all the highlights in the sky came back.
