4th Place
Lost Surfer *
by Jon Stern

Laguna Beach, California

While walking on the beach the other night,
I came across what appeared to be a large seashell.
But when I brushed away the veil of sand,
I was mortified by what I beheld.
Luckily I had my camera with me,
And with trembling hands I took this photo.
The police believe this to be the remains
Of a surfer who went missing last year.

I actually thought that story was a true one. Heh it's still a nice shot.

So you're saying that I managed to take a photo with an $1800 lens and make it look as though it were taken with a $100 one! Is that a complement? LOL! - Jon S :-P

It almost looks like a lensbaby shot. Very well done.

Erm, that was just a story. It's actually a plastic, snap-together model about 10cm high. I used black shoe polish to age it and then burried it in the sand. It was completely dark when I set it up. The lighting was a 550EX on an off-camera cord held low. - Jon S

A reallife shot, spooky lighting to help you when you found the skull. Good thing you had a camera with you! Yes it is terrifying when you think about it.

Yes, there is some radial blur in there. Thanks for the comments. - Jon S

Interesting tale... Good idea and well executed too. The grain and (what appears to me to be) radial blur intensify the feeling. -Arn

Ok, I've looked at this one several times now. It absolutely creeps me out. Definitely one of the best ones, IMO. Nice job!
