Brrtmrrtmrrmtrrmrrtrr*

My son, who, by the time he was two, had already flown 24000 miles in eight flights, is really into airplanes these days...

Have trouble understanding the title? Well I had problems spelling the sound! Just look at those lips and you'll understand...

Adorable shot Olaf, love the expression on the boy's face and of course, reminds one of one's youth, guess we have all been there and done that. Cheers.

The skin color may be a little off...but in my opinion that does not take away from such a wonderful shot. To catch a two year old like this requires infinite patients...hats off to you!

Thank Rob! I can assure you that this is not a montage! I used the shadow/highlight feature of PhotoshopCS to balance the exposure. I did use a flash to fill in the shadows, but the flash exposure compensation was set to -1 from a previous shoot, so had to lift up the exposure on the boy a bit... --Olaf

Nice shot and good job on the exposure. After viewing for a while some things jumped out: The orange shirt seems to be chopped and straight in places, this gives the impression of multiple compositions (superimposed). The subject looks a little too sharp for the focus of the background. Once again, excellent exposure.

Thank you Gayle, Craig, Jeff, Shu and Anders!

Anders, I sharpened the downsized image using the high-pass method (new layer, Filter>Other>High Pass and then set the layer blending mode to linear light), got halos around the arm, so I added a layer mask and painted with black around the edge of his arm and the outline of the plane, so in fact there is no extra sharpening applied on those parts. I do see what you are saying though, but must contribute that to the backlit scene.

Very nice picture, the eye is drawn to the toy airplane. I can't quite decide if there is maybe a bit of haloing around the arm and hand, difficult to not get some with this light though.

My Apple Cinema monitor shows perfect color. This shot sure is a winner! Shu

Olaf,
The skin tones look perfect now. This is one of my favorite shots in the gallery so far.

Outstanding choice of viewpoint and shirt, and I had to laugh at the title. As an aeronautical engineer, I approve of his current obsession. :-)

Beautiful photo, and yes he looks like a little brother to "Summer Sky". In fact, the child looks very much like my boys did at that age, so he'd certainly fit in here!

OK, here's what happened: I looked at this on my CRT-monitor at work and did agree the skintones were slightly muddy and green. Still at work, I applied some curves - lifted the RGB-curve a little and lowered the curve of the green channel very slightly (no mask - done to the entire image). I then emailed the corrected, layered image to myself at home, and a jpg-version to Lonnit (whom I was emailing anyway). When I got home, I compared the two images on my hardware-calibrated flat-panel display. The corrected image looked better also at home, which is why I have now updated the image here. Thank you Lonnit and Jeff!

This is a lovely image that tells a story.

Regarding the skin tones - they look different to me on different monitors. On my calibrated flat panel they look right on, but on my crt they look just slightly green.

Thank you Shu Billly and Lonnit!

Billy, one thing I would have liked different myself, would be for his eyes to be unmistakingly staring at the plane. Of course, this is nearly impossible, as he is cross-eyed.

Lonnit, about the skin-tones - firstly he is extremely backlit, which is why I used my 420EX to fill in the shadows, secondly our monitors don't seem to show the same. Regarding Gayle, I guess it is only right to give some credit to her, as this image:http://www.pbase.com/image/24990551 probably was somewhere in the back of my head when I chose to put one of his orange T-shirts on him. I knew the sky was blue with white clouds and I knew I'd want a low angle to get the sky in the background. Some credit should also go to Roberta for making me more aware of the power of complementary colors.

I would really like to know what other people think of the skin-tones! Is it my (hardware-calibrated) monitor or Lonnit's? Or is it just a matter of personal preferences? I guess I'll never know for sure, but it would be nice to hear what other people are seeing...

Hey, did Gayle come visit you to take this shot or did you send your son to Oz? LOL! Nice shot. I'd like to see the skin tones brightened up and then it would really shine. :) Good capture. ~ Lonnit

Great Shot, I would not need a title to understand this one! Makes me wish for a younger day, and a toy airplane. Man is ever hard to find anything to critique here, EXCELLENT!

Beautiful image of a guy with an idea! Shows you one doesn't have to board a plane to be flying high. Shu

Thanks Roberta! I was lying down on the grass to get the perspective and composition as I wanted it. Only trouble was, you are not very mobile when lying on your back, while two-year old boys are very much so - at least this one! --Olaf

Olaf,
Nice perspective and composition. Thank God for the voting booth with the spelling of your title! Roberta

Two-year olds (he'll be three in 2.5 months) are not exactly known to be very willing to do what you ask, so this was actually more challenging than it might look... --Olaf
