This is a small part of a larger structure built by David Hess from "90 tons of obsolete machinery and equipment donated from a number of Baltimore, MD industries for the Baltimore Museum of Industry". I liked the shape of this particular part. The tag on it shows that it is produced by Kent Mill Co. Yes Victor, it was raining quite heavily when I took the picture so the larger greenish specks and vertical lines are rain drops. This mechanical structure contained rich surface detail, which camera was trying to reproduce faithfully. The color of the rough surface was steel gray/green with red rust starting to corrode everywhere. Noise from the ISO 800 was present but its grains were smaller than the texture of the surface. I think most of the damage is done by the jpeg compression in order to fit the image size to 150 kb. For this image because of its high level of detail I needed to use low quality jpeg of 30% to reduce the image size to 150 kb, while for similar size images, but with less detail jpeg quality is usually 60-70% (reaching the same 150 kb). The net effect is that some of the surface detail appears as noise. Here is a 100% crop from the same image with jpeg quality of 100 (970k):

Interesting shape - what is it? (Victor - it looks like this was brought up from a very deep shadow - I've noticed similar noise especially at high iso like this.) -Ed Hahn

I see some short vertical lines in the image. Was it raining or snowing when you took the picture? Also, the noise seems a bit excessive for ISO 800 making me wonder if it's not really noise but part of the subject somehow. I'm referring to the colored specks. Can you comment? -- Victor
