Victor, thank you for the comments. I thought about taking the picture while actually lighting the cigarette, in fact I took a few shots of that. In addition to not being happy with them, I liked the open ended nature of having the match right at the tip. The picture leaves it up to the viewer if the subject is debating whether or not to light the cigarette, is in the process of doing so, etc. Hence the addiction may be in process of being broken. And the back glow was just to define the profile, without it the back just blended in with the background. Perhaps I should have left it out? - Jon

I thought you did very well. My main gripes are really just quibbles. I'd have liked to see a cherry on the cig. Also, how come the subject's back is glowing? -- Victor

I am a total newbie to digital photography and just received my 10D last week. Figured I was in over my head here, but trying new things is the only was to improve. I don't yet have the skill to do exactly what I wanted to with this image; it didn't quite match up to what I saw in my head. Nonetheless, I kinda like the feel of it. I would appreciate any comments at all. Thanks.
