Electric Jellyfish *
by Jon Stern
10th place

A close-up of an different type of plasma lamp from the one I used in my other two entries. This one is shaped like a bell-jar and has curving streaks of lightning that flicker down the sides. It looks like a hyperactive jellyfish!

Interesting pattern! Like the crop as well. --Olaf

Woah. That crop is cool. What's up with that pattern? I was already impressed by the pattern you can see in this image. I assume the banding is caused by the oscillations of the AC current. As for those other patterns, who knows.

I love this picture by the way!

There's some interesting detail in the pattern of the electrical discharge that can't be seen in this image, but is clearly visible in the original 100% view. I'm not sure what causes such an ordered, regular structure to appear. I've posted a crop of the original capture here:

Very well done - I keep looking for one of those inspirational sayings at the bottom of it. Good effect and composition.

I like this one the best - there's a real sense of motion rather than a cloud-like feel. -Ed Hahn

It sure does look like a jellyfish!! This is very cool. The blue tones really add to it! Great shot.
