Thanks for your nice comments. I spent some time with a few different kiwi slices. The top one is very thin so that more light will come through. The bottom slice had different thicknesses, with the bottom a lot thicker than the top to create the balance. With this arrangement, your eyes will start looking at the details at the top right and then move on to the rest of the photo.

This is the kind of shot I had in mind for the Patterns-challenge. I don't have any macro-capable lenses for my EOS10D though. High on my wish-list. One of my first shots with my first SLR (Olympus OM-2S Program) was of a kiwi. I only had a 50mm normal lens, made an extension tube out of cardboard and closed the lens down manually. It worked but had low contrast due to stray light. My conclusion at that time was to try slices of kiwi, mainly backlit but also some light from the front - exactly what seems to be the case here. Nice capture! Love the overlapping of the slices! --Olaf
