Cool idea. I assume the fan was running, to get the effect... I wonder if it wouldn't also be interesting to try with the fan stationary.

Yes. The laser was taped to a short length of welding rod chucked in the drill so I could change the sweep by bending the rod. I this case, it swept a ring slightly larger than the height of the fan. I slowly swept the laser ring across the fan in serveral passes to get this effect, which was the best looking of about 60 attempts
