The foreground candles in this shot could have fooled an autofocusing camera, but the old Leica had a bright rangefinder/viewfinder for accurate manual focusing. I still use manual focus in this kind of situation, but it is much more chancey with the not-so-bright viewfinders of modern digital SLRs.
