North-India to South-China. Introduced to Sri Lanka, Australia and South Africa.

The following 2 subspecies are being recognized:
Axis porcinus porcinus - Pakistan, North-India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bagladesh and Myanmar;
Axis porcinus annamiticus - South-China, Thailand and Cambodia. Formerly Laos and Vietnam.
