Africa south of the Sahara.
The following 3 species are being recognized:
Quelea quelea quelea - Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia to Southcentral-Chad and North-Central African Republic;
Quelea quelea aethiopica - Sudan to Somalia and south to Northeast-Zambia and Tanzania;
Quelea quelea lathamii - Gabon, Congo and Angola to Malawi and Mozambique and south to South Africa.
