The following 2 subspecies are being recognized:
Euplectes hordeaceus hordeaceus - Mauritania and to West-Sudan, DR Congo, Tanzania and south to Angola and Mozambique;
Euplectes hordeaceus craspedopetus - South-Sudan, Southwest-Ethiopia, Uganda and West-Kenya.
