The following 10 subspecies are being recognised:
Serinus mozambicus mozambicus - Coastal Kenya to Zambia, Mozambique, Southeast-Botswana and Northeast-South Africa;
Serinus mozambicus granti - East-South Africa, East-Swaziland and South-Mozambique;
Serinus mozambicus vansoni - Southeast-Angola and Namibia to North-Botswana and Zambia;
Serinus mozambicus tando - Gabon to North-Angola, Southwest-Congo and São Tomé;
Serinus mozambicus samaliyae - Southeast-Congo to Southwest-Tanzania and Zambia;
Serinus mozambicus punctigula - Cameroon;
Serinus mozambicus caniceps - Senegal to Cameroon;
Serinus mozambicus grotei - South-Sudan to Eritrea and West-Ethiopia;
Serinus mozambicus gommaensis - West-Ethiopia;
Serinus mozambicus barbatus - South-Chad to Sudan, Northeast-Congo, West-Kenya and Central-Tanzania.
