North, Central and northern South America.
The following 2 subspecies are being recognized:
Leucophaeus atricapilla megalopterus - coastal North and Central America. Winters to South-Peru;
Leucophaeus atricapilla atricapilla - West-Indies to North-Venezuelan islands. Winters to North-Brazil.
