This species is sometimes split from Baltic Gull as Lesser Black-Backed Gull - Larus graellsii - Kleine Mantelmeeuw
West-Palearctic region. Winters to Africa and Middle-East.

The following 3 subspecies are being recognised:
Larus fuscus fuscus - North-Norway, Sweden, Finland to White Sea. Winters to Africa and Southwest-Asia;
Larus fuscus intermedius - Denmark to West-Norway, locally south to Northeast-Spain. Winters to West-Africa;
Larus fuscus graellsii - Iceland, Faeroes, British Islands, France and Portugal. Winters to West-Africa.
