Amanita-cokeri5364.jpg

Babcock Property, Greenwich, CT

On this walk, Steve Rock, I believe, found and recognized a rather small young Amanita button as Amanita cokeri. Now that's impressive. These two specimens of Amanita cokeri were found a week ago when our group walked the Babcock Property in Greenwich, CT. This photo illustrates the cottony warts which cover the cap as well as the hanging remnants of volval material at the cap edge. The stipe is quite solid, tapers toward the top and is rather scaly towards the base. Most distinctive is the ring, formed from the partial veil, at the stipe apex. Notice that it is membranous and has a thicker hanging edge, which makes it appear to be doubled. These specimens were found growing under oak.
