Cantharellus-cinnabarinus55.jpg

Westmoreland Sanctuary, Bedford, NY

This lovely, but relatively diminuative chanterelle is commonly referred to as the Cinnabar or Red Chanterelle. It is very common at this time of year (July-September) in the eastern part of the continent. The funnel-shaped Cantharellus cinnabarinus often grows in damp woods in fairly large groups, sometimes even with the more substantial Cantharellus cibarius. Like all the chanterelles, this one, too, differs from gilled fungi in having a blunt edged vein-like pore-bearing surface, rather than distinct gills. This edible has a delicate flavor.
