Amanita-cokeri6027.jpg

Babcock Property, Greenwich, CT

Here we have a gorgeous young (inedible) Amanita cokeri specimen that was carefully extracted from the soil, thus enabling us to properly identify this species. Amanita cokeri belongs to the group of Amanita having a rooting or turnip-like bulbous base. Distinctive to this particular species is the concentric arrangement of volval scales at the apex of the bulb. Since the cap of the Amanita pictured above has not yet opened, you will want to look at the next photo to see the other important distinguishing features of Amanita cokeri associated with the stipe and cap.
