This shot may have been sharper had the lens not been fully open. But sometimes, there is no time to adjust the camera. You have to take the shot when an opportunity presents itself because it may be fleeting, especially with birds. Then, if possible, make the necessary adjustments. In this case, the bird flew away after just a few seconds so additional shots were not possible.

Real nice shot! Like you say, there is little time to make adjustments, I generally keep mine set on P with exposure adjusted for the light and hope for the best!
