Yes, and every time I see an image like this, I remember trying to cut the prior year's growth as close to the ground as possible. I try to harvest spears when they are around a foot tall. They're usually good as long as the tips are closed. We're going to be away during part of peak growing season, so I'm hoping our neighbors will take me up on my offer. Wild asparagus is fairly abundant, but I'm happy to have this close-to-home.
Are the cut off stalks last seasons asparagus growths? I know after the first few cuttings they get either tough or bitter and are allowed to grow out. Paul
