Wild Thing (You Make my Heart Sing)

Denver Art Museum

We went to the Maurice Sendak exhibition at the Denver Art Museum. There was a lot of Where the Wild Things Are, including many original sketches, and costumes from the movie version (like this one). I always loved that book, but my favorite Maurice Sendak was the Little Bear series, which he illustrated, but didn't write. My wife still occasionally refers to our 32 year old son, now a software engineer living in London, as "Little Bear". :)

In one room of the exhibition there were scenes from the 2009 movie playing on screens. When we were there, a few teenagers were looking at them. One said to the other "This movie is from 2009", to which the other replied "Wow! It's really good!". I suppose they were expecting movies from 2009 to be grainy old black and white films, with speech cards, instead of sound. Who would have thought that a movie from sixteen years ago could be good? I mean, we barely had electricity back then.

If the exhibition comes to a gallery near you, it's well worth it. We spent over two and a half hours there. The audio guide was great. All sorts of information about his childhood in New York, and a great insight into his creative process. The sketches that he did are worth seeing. Although Where the Wild Things Are is his best-known work, he did so much more, both as an illustrator and a writer.

My uncle and aunt lived in the same building as Sendak, and I hope to meet him but never did. Still love his "Where The Wild Things Are" book.
