09 White Sands NP

White Sands NP, NM

While not as hot as Tucson was, it was still pretty hot today in White Sands National Park.
We visited it today on our road trip to MN.
This is a shot of the soaptree yucca. The white sand at White Sands National Park is composed primarily of gypsum crystals.

Thanks. Yes people walk on the Dunes. They have some areas set aside for that. The even have spots where they let people slide down them on plastic snow saucers.
They are not hard to walk on, maybe a bit going down if the sands shifts some.

I failed to mention how much I enjoy this entry with or without “perfect dune lighting”. Did you attempt to climb up the dunes, was it difficult? As far as that goes do they even allow people to walk on the dunes? Paul

Paul - I recall an article like that - needing the shadows. Needless to say, we were nowhere near sunrise or sunset.
I still intend to play some with Photoshop, but I doubt they will get much better.

I read an article that claimed the only successful way to capture photos of sand dunes is to shoot early in the AM or wait till near sundown to get the long shadows which enhances the natural beauty of the dunes. Seems plausible to me but I’ve only been in one desert (Sonoran) and I saw never ending cacti and rock hard sand but no dunes. Paul

T - my first time at this National Park. The dunes are pretty spectacular in places, but I found it hard to get more than a few photos that I really liked. I think it was due to not having a lot of vegetation to draw the eye to.

That is sandy, I am surprised that anything grows there at all! Good shot keeping highlights in balance, Traveller
