13 Morning Wood

Morning light anyway.

This is my autumn maple that split and once I realized it was damaged I ran up the street to Sutherlands and got a 24 inch by 5/8 inch all thread rod.
I pulled out my Milwaukee hammer drill and a long 5/8 inch drill bit and 20 minutes later Frankenstein was born.

Woke up with wood!

Better than waking up with a rattlesnake or scorpion.

Are you familiar with the ZZ Top song?

I can't comment on the tree surgeon details, but I appreciate the image, and the title. :)

If you are "mourning", then you have given up too early. A cable around both split trunks and higher up will work well.

Mr. T what can I say other than BUSTED! I choose the title to see who would catch on and comment first. You win the prize! It truly was early morning light tho… Paul

This is a stop gap repair, what’s not visible is the split goes most of the way to the ground. I considered cabling but choose to rod it figuring cabling would have caused the trunk to bow out and split even more.

I had a arborist trim the tree in December and his comment was he uses the same method and the only thing he would have done different would be to run a chainsaw down the split to promote healing and increase the odds of it growing back together. He also said it’s unlikely it will survive long term and will have to come down eventually. When that day comes if I’m still able I’ll bring out the saw and drop and chop it. If not I’ll have to hire a tree service to take it down.

T - my only criticism of this approach is that the bolt is too low and close to the split. Once the branch/2nd trunk grows some more, and it splits, it will pull the threaded rod right on through. This will work for a couple of years.
I would have put the cable another foot or two up the tree. But Paul's threaded rod would be too short.

Jim seems to have taken your title at face value...I am almost certain that you are fun.ing us, I take this entirely differently...ahem

Also it is within your nature to tug on Superman's (Jim) Cape.

I ain't buying your story.

Dirty minded me...(grin)

Great solution.
Maples have a tendency to split like this. Over time I have added some steel cable wrapped around the split trunks that held well and the tree grew right around it.
