Thanks everyone. I think the white stuff you're seeing is actually just a surface made of tiny stones. It looks white, because the contrast was high, and I exaggerated it with processing. I've put another shot of the tree, from the front, in pending, so you can see what the various surfaces around it look like. This tree is in a courtyard area outside the student center. There are fountains in the middle of the courtyard, and tables around two of the sides. Alastair

I wonder if the white stuff on the ground might be graupel which can happen at any temperature. I saw it in late august in Woodland Park Co once when the temperature was in the 70s. Granted Woodland Park is 3000+ feet higher in elevation. Paul
