I agree, it's what we call a spine back spider. They are in the family of the orb weaver and they are real interesting to watch. I captured one last year and photographed him, the large spiney body is hard not soft like most spiders. So maybe if a bird tries to take a bite of him those spines bite back. Paul

Spined Micrathena. Fairly common, though not often seen. Completely harmless to humans.
