K if you didn't follow the entire comment thread on this what we are discussing is Jim using the popup flash to master his 420ex flash as a remote slave. I've done a ton of off camera flash work using both triggers and master/slave setup and was trying to help Jim get his working for off camera flash photography. Paul.

Two cents from my site - better not to use the build-in pop up flash, the quality is not good. Use ran external instead.

Probably true. It just may not be quite as flexible as I wanted, as I want to play with different lighting angles. But I can rotate the flash, so it might work well. Worth a try.

Critical::: make sure the front of your speed light (infrared receiver) can directly see the flash light produced by your camera. In other words the receiver must be facing towards the camera. I'm guessing you may have it turned away and it's seeing the light from a indirect source. Paul.

It works; thanks. However it only triggers if my flash is within about 12 inches of the camera.

You have to go into the flash control menu in your camera and set the popup as a master.. Get out your camera manual, it will be in there on how to do it. My 50d does not have flash mastering built in or I'd be able to tell you the steps needed to take. You know the old saying, RTFM! I sense new lighting schemes in your photography shortly. Paul.

Re yellow line - now gone. Thanks. It was a reflection on a fence in the foreground ; I don't know how I missed it.

Like the idea! Only wonder - what is that yellow line at the bottom ? Or this is on my screen only?

I am confused. I have an older 420EX Speedlight which works just fine when it is on the camera. I can put it into a "slave" mode. If I take it off the camera, how do I trigger it to fire if I don't have a cord connecting it to the camera? What am I missing?

Jim

Noooooooo, you don't need a (sync) cord, the 60d like the 7d has built flash control using the pop up flash as the master where it tells the remote flash (slave) to fire without firing the pop up flash and spoiling your scene with straight on light. I think you can even set it to use group ratios meaning the pop up Flash Fire at say 20% and your main off camera flash will fire at 60%. I have 2 speed lights and used wireless triggers in the past but both sets of my triggers failed recently and I have not replaced them yet. So if you have a speed light your already set with everything you need to shoot off camera.

Paul,
You are right on. I was at a video tutorial last night where the speaker emphasized using a off camera flash. He just had a long cord connecting the flash to the camera. It should probably be my next purchase.

Thanks! I was joking about lighting the background. (But that's a good explanation of your process.)
Canon Image Challenge15-Nov-2014 01:01
That's where a speed light with a diffuser at 20 to 30% or so works wonders. Even better if you have off camera flash capability or a reflector
Board to change the angle of light. Paul.

Joshua, the background (without hand) was lit by the setting sun; and processed in Lightroom where I bumped up the vibrance a bit. In this shot, the sun is below the horizon, just left of middle. The hand was shot earlier than this shot and was lit by the sun when it was just above the horizon. I wanted that light, as I think a flash is too harsh. I even darkened the hand a bit to give it the feel of evening.
Joshua Tanzer14-Nov-2014 22:52
And how did you light the background?

Great idea and great execution! - Ken

Paul,
Thanks. No flash, just 2 separate exposures masked and blended.
I did get lucky with the evening clouds last night.

I like your creative thinking on this and nice colorful sky. Did you use the built in flash for foreground lighting? Paul
