This month, we are moving beyond what a subject is and focusing on how it feels. Texture is the visual representation of a surface’s tactile quality—the roughness of bark, the softness of a petal, the grit of a rusted bolt, or the repeating ridges of a sand dune.
The Challenge: From Micro to Macro
We want to see a variety of scales! Texture isn't just for macro lenses. Think about texture in terms of:
The Massive: A mountain of jagged boulders or the weathered grain of an ancient rock face.
The Everyday: The weave of a favorite knitted hat, the condensation on a cold glass, or the crust of a fresh loaf of bread.
The Abstract: Looking so closely at a subject that it becomes a sea of shapes, shadows, and surfaces.
Rules & Guidelines
Variety is Key: We encourage each photographer to show us their range—try to submit a mix of large-scale "environmental" textures and close-up "detail" textures.
Any Device: Whether you are using a high-end DSLR or the smartphone in your pocket, texture is everywhere. Look for side-lighting (like early morning or late afternoon sun) to really make those surfaces pop!

Exhibition: Your best "Texture" shots from the archives.
