St Ives

St Ives, originally a small fishing village, now primarily a popular seaside resort. Incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639.
Renowned for its number of artists.
The town originated after the arrival in the 5th century of the Irish saint Ia, from whom it derives its name. The town was the site
of a particularly notorious atrocity during the Prayer Book Rebellion of 1549. The English provost marshal came to St Ives and invited
the portreeve (port warden) to lunch, asking him to have a gallows erected while they dined. Then they walked down to the gallows
and the Provost Marshall ordered the portreeve to mount the gallows. He was then hanged for being a “busy rebel”.
