West Macdonnells
The Macdonnell ranges stretch for 400km east and west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
To the local (Arrente) people they are known as Yeperenye (Caterpillar Dreaming).
This trip we focused on the West Macdonnells which has numerous scenic gaps, walks,
gorges and waterholes. The land is a colour pallette of red rocky and purple ranges,
greenery and stark white ghost gums.
It is not hard to see why the area inspires artists and is depicted in the paintings
of reknowned Aboriginal artist, Albert Namatjira. Those who fly direct to and only
visit 'nearby' Uluru (Ayers Rock) I feel are really missing out on the stunning
scenery of the Alice Springs surrounds and Macdonnell Ranges in Central Australia.
