We were extremely fortunate to witness the eruption of the Fernandina volcano during the third night of our tour. Although quite active, the volcano had not erupted in several years, so our timing was incredibly lucky. Our captain maneuvered our boat around to the southwest side of Fernandina so we could not only photograph the lava flow down the slopes, but could see it flowing into the sea. One of these images, shot by Paula, is a prize winner in a Galapagos Conservancy photo contest, and will appear in their 2010 calendar!
