In the late 1920s, George Dealey, publisher of The Dallas Morning News, donated land for the creation of a western gateway into the city. The triple underpass beneath a railroad was decided upon in the 1930s and opened in 1936.
The large park area above it was landscaped and planted with Texas oak trees. The park, named Dealey Plaza in Dealey’s honor, opened in 1941.
There are two reflecting pools and two white concrete colonnades. They are intersected by Main Street and are a block away from the JFK Memorial in the previous photo.
