Sanctuary of Apollo .jpg

The Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi dates from ancient times, and is the setting where the famous Oracle of Delphi, a priestess known as the Pythia, answered in riddles those who came to consult her. The Sanctuary is quite large and is divided into an Upper Sanctuary winding its way up the hillside, and a lower sanctuary in the valley below. The Oracle sat in the back of the Temple of Apollo just below the great theater. This scene shows part of the Sacred Way leading up the hillside, with the Treasury of the Athenians in the center of the picture.
